What is fascia?

Fascia, also called connective tissue, envelopes the muscles, bones and joints.  It holds us together, supporting our structure and giving us our shape.  Responding to inefficient postural habits, chronic tension and injury, connective tissue tends to shorten and harden. Structural Integration rehydrates and restores elasticity to the fascia.


Will the results last?

Yes!  Keep in mind however, that as life changes, bodies change in response.  Injuries, accidents, lengthy illnesses, and emotional stress may necessitate additional work.


What does a Structural Integration session feel like?

During the session you may experience pleasant sensation from the area that is being worked while at other times, momentary discomfort.  The practitioner will apply the appropriate pressure, based on the client’s needs and feedback.  Early on, Structural Integration developed a reputation as an uncomfortable process.  Over time, the Structural Integration community has developed the work to be even more effective, while working at levels that are comfortable to the client.  Most new clients who are concerned about Structural Integration being uncomfortable no longer find that an issue.


Is Structural Integration different from massage?

Yes.  The training of the practitioner, the focus of the session, and the results are all different.  Massage focuses releasing muscular tension and stress while Structural Integration focuses on releasing adhesions within the connective tissue system.  Addressing these adhesions allow for changing patterns of movement and making postural changes long-term.


Does Structural Integration have psychological benefits?

While Structural Integration is primarily concerned with physical changes in the body, it does impact the whole person.  We are made up of emotions, attitudes, belief systems, and behavior patterns combined with perceptions of body image.  These forces all combine to determine how each person is shaped.   For some people, physical patterns they have adopted can be related to emotional tension.  For others, structure may carry the evidence of an emotional experience. Aligning the physical structure is a very useful tool,  and complementary to achieving balance within the mental and emotional aspects of wellness.  For individuals seeking to optimize their human potential, Structural Integration sessions can be a positive resource in achieving this goal.


How long are the sessions?

Sessions vary in length.  Most often lasting 60 to 75 minutes.
